This six-day experience includes unique aspects of our fascinating region - the endless horizons, brilliant blue skies, native wildlife and red sand deserts. Our tour into the “corner country” will show you these sights and introduce you to the real Outback characters who live and work in this remote area.

DAY 1: BROKEN HILL - TIBOOBURRA

Head north from Broken Hill to the “corner country”. Gain your first experience of the Outback - our special heritage. Continue in the steps of early explorers towards tiny Milparinka. With a population of approx. 10 people, the town stands at the entrance to the mighty Strzelecki Desert. Capt. Charles Sturt and company tackled this wilderness and spent 6 months on the banks of a muddy creek, close to the present township. Their companion, James Poole, eventually died from repeated attacks of scurvy and is buried there – leaving visible evidence to all who visit of the hardships suffered by early explorers. Continue to Tibooburra, the most remote town in NSW, our base for the next two nights. Dinner, bed and breakfast are available at the Tibooburra Hotel (if required).

DAY 2: STURT NATIONAL PARK - CAMERON CORNER - TIBOOBURRA

Wake to the sound of the Outback silence! Today our route takes us through magnificent Sturt National Park to Cameron Corner where South Australia, Queensland and New South Wales meet. Take the time and opportunity to learn about a very special part of the Australian bush; capture the spirit of “corner country”. Kangaroos, emus and birdlife by the hundreds. Shoot as much as you like ... with your camera! Travel along the dingo fence and return to Tibooburra.

DAY 3: TIBOOBURRA - WHITE CLIFFS

From Tibooburra, head south-east to opal fields of White Cliffs, lunching enroute at a dry creek bed. White Cliffs is unique - the people live underground. The many shafts dug by miners provide an eerie, lunar landscape to explore. Sightseeing options: opal shop, underground museum, galleries, solar power station. Dinner, accommodation and breakfast are available at the Underground Motel (if preferred).

DAY 4: WHITE CLIFFS - WILCANNIA – MENINDEE – COPI HOLLOW

Departing “the Cliffs” we make our way into the historic river township of Wilcannia, which, in the early days, played a major role in opening-up the Outback. River-boats plied their trade up and down the mighty Darling River, Australia’s longest. Some of the old pylons still stand on the banks, timber platforms where the produce was loaded onto bullock, horse or camel wagons and carried slowly
over harsh country to outlying properties and villages. You can almost feel the history on the banks of the Darling. As we cross the River we look out for the red-breasted black cockatoo which is a unique species for this area. We follow the river as is meanders in and out of the huge river red gums to the vast freshwater lakes storage scheme at that other old river port of Menindee. Tour the amazing Menindee Lakes area, then overnight at Copi Hollow Caravan / camping area.

Day 5: MENINDEE - BROKEN HILL

Today we follow the Darling in its wide snaking curves through Kinchega National Park, as oasis for wildlife in this semi-arid region - watching for emus, kangaroos as well as corellas and kookaburras. While driving back to Broken Hill we should again witness a stunning Outback sunset.
Your choice of accommodation/caravan parks available.

Day 6: BROKEN HILL - MUTAWINTJI NATIONAL PARK – BROKEN HILL (D)

Today we head north-east to the hauntingly beautiful Mutawintji National Park. Situated in the scenic Bynguano Ranges, the secluded gorges and tranquil rock-holes attract an abundance of wildlife. Scattered in the caves and overhangs are galleries of Aboriginal paintings and engravings, evidence of the tribes who sheltered here during the dry seasons for thousands of years prior to the arrival of European man - evoking memories lost in the mists of Dreamtime. Return to town late afternoon. Tonight is end of tour group dinner hosted by your guide. Location to be advised.
